How to calculate fibre intake
Fibre targets are set two ways: as a flat amount per day, or scaled to energy intake at 14 g per 1,000 kcal. UK guidance uses the flat figure — 30 g a day for adults — while the scaled version adjusts for how much you eat.
Both soluble and insoluble fibre count towards the target. Soluble fibre from oats, beans and fruit helps regulate blood glucose and cholesterol; insoluble fibre from wholegrains and vegetables adds bulk and speeds transit.

Reading the result
The average UK adult eats around 20 g a day, so a gap of about 10 g is typical. That is roughly two slices of wholemeal bread plus a portion of beans — closing it does not require a wholesale change of diet.
Where this goes wrong. Increasing intake abruptly causes bloating and discomfort. Add 5 g a week and increase fluid intake alongside it, since fibre needs water to do its job. Anyone with a bowel condition should follow clinical advice instead.
