Juan works in exercise physiology and has spent years turning laboratory measurements into something a person can act on. He writes the body-composition, training and pregnancy calculators, and reviews anything on the site that converts a measurement into advice.

He is blunt about what these tools are. A body mass index is a ratio of two numbers and knows nothing about muscle; a calorie estimate is a population average applied to an individual; a due date is the middle of a distribution, not an appointment. Every page he writes says so, because the alternative is a visitor treating an estimate as a diagnosis.

What he does think is worth the effort: tracking a number over time rather than staring at one reading, and understanding which inputs actually move the result.
