Formatting is reading. Structured data is written for machines, and a serialiser has no reason to spend bytes on whitespace, so what arrives is a single line in which the structure is carried entirely by punctuation. Indentation and folding put that structure back where a reader can see it, which is usually all that stands between a confusing payload and an obvious one.
