How to calculate dOTS calculator

DOTS (Dynamic Objective Team Scoring) is a bodyweight-normalization formula introduced in 2019 to replace the older Wilks formula in competitive powerlifting. Like Wilks, it turns a squat, bench press and deadlift total into a single coefficient-adjusted score so lifters of different bodyweights can be ranked on one scale — but it was fitted to a larger, more modern dataset and behaves more consistently across the full bodyweight range.

The DOTS coefficient comes from a 4th-degree polynomial fitted to bodyweight, with separate sets of five constants for men and women. Dividing 500 by that polynomial produces the multiplier applied to the total. The equipment field above (raw or equipped) is purely informational here — it labels the lift for your own reference and does not feed into the DOTS formula, since DOTS itself makes no distinction between raw and equipped lifting; the polynomial coefficients are identical either way.

Why dOTS calculator matters

The maths itself is rarely complicated; what is hard is remembering which figures to use and in what order, which is exactly what a dedicated calculator is for.

Reading the result

A higher DOTS score means a stronger performance relative to bodyweight. Because DOTS was fitted to more recent, higher-quality competition data than the 1994 Wilks formula, most federations that switched now treat it as the more accurate cross-weight-class comparison, particularly for lifters well outside the middle of the bodyweight distribution.

Where this goes wrong. The main mistake is expecting the equipment selection to change the score — it will not, by design, since raw and equipped lifting use the same DOTS polynomial and the field is kept purely for labelling your own entry, not as a missing scoring variable. The formula was also fitted specifically to replace Wilks at the low and high ends of the bodyweight range, where Wilks was known to be less accurate, so DOTS and Wilks scores for the same lifter will diverge slightly the further that lifter's bodyweight sits from the middle of the range.

A useful check on any unfamiliar result is to compare it against a rough mental estimate first — round the inputs to convenient numbers and see whether the calculator's answer lands in roughly the same territory. A wildly different figure usually means one of the fields was entered in the wrong unit, most often a percentage typed as a whole number where a decimal was expected, or the reverse.

DOTS is designed as a pure bodyweight-normalization formula and does not have separate coefficients for raw versus equipped lifting — that distinction is handled at the federation and division level (separate raw and equipped rankings), not inside the scoring formula itself. The field is included here so the calculator can label a result, not because it changes the arithmetic.

DOTS was fitted using a larger and more recent set of competition results than the original 1994 Wilks dataset, and it corrects for a known weakness in Wilks where lifters at the very light and very heavy ends of the bodyweight range were scored somewhat inconsistently relative to lifters in the middle of the range.

It returns total. With 80 kg bodyweight, 150 kg squat and 100 kg bench press, that comes to 430 kg. Change any field and the figure moves with it.

Whenever one of the underlying figures changes — a new interest rate, a different balance, an updated term — since the result only reflects what is currently in the fields. There is no need to keep a separate record of past results; the web address for a filled-in version already carries the figures used to produce it.

Not unless a tax rate or a fee is explicitly one of the inputs above. Where it is not, the figure shown is a gross calculation, and any tax due depends on your personal circumstances and current tax rules, which are worth checking separately.

The arithmetic itself is exact — the calculator applies the formula shown above precisely, with no rounding until the final figure is displayed. The uncertainty, where it exists, is entirely in the inputs: an estimated rate or an approximate balance carries that same approximation through to the result.
