How to calculate alcohol calories

Every alcoholic drink carries calories from the alcohol itself, independent of anything else in the glass. This calculator works out exactly that figure — the calories contributed by pure ethanol — from a serving size, an ABV percentage and how many drinks you are counting.

The drink type selector above does not change the arithmetic: alcohol calories depend only on volume, ABV and drink count, which are physically the same regardless of whether the liquid is beer or spirits. Reading the result

This figure is the calories from alcohol only. It ignores any residual sugar or carbohydrate in the drink itself — the malt in beer, the residual sugar in a sweet wine, the mixer in a cocktail. For a dry spirit taken neat, alcohol calories are close to the whole story; for a sweet cocktail, a dessert wine or a sugary cider, the true total calorie count runs noticeably higher than what this calculator shows.

Where this goes wrong. The most common mistake is treating this number as the drink's full calorie count. A sugary cocktail or a sweet liqueur can carry as many calories from sugar as from alcohol, sometimes more — this calculator only ever measures the alcohol portion, which is a simplification made deliberately so the formula stays universal across every drink type.

A useful check on any unfamiliar result is to compare it against a rough mental estimate first — round the inputs to convenient numbers and see whether the calculator's answer lands in roughly the same territory. A wildly different figure usually means one of the fields was entered in the wrong unit, most often a percentage typed as a whole number where a decimal was expected, or the reverse.

Because alcohol calories are pure physics — 0.789 grams of ethanol per millilitre of pure alcohol, and 7 kcal per gram of ethanol, apply identically whether it is beer, wine or spirits.
