What this counts

Word count splits the text on whitespace, which matches how word processors and most style guides count — a hyphenated word like "well-known" counts as one word, the same way it would in Word or Google Docs. Character count includes every character typed, including spaces and punctuation; the "no spaces" figure strips spaces and line breaks only, leaving punctuation counted.

Sentence count looks for text ending in ., ! or ?, so a piece of text with no terminal punctuation at all is still counted as one sentence. Paragraph count splits on blank lines, so a wall of text with no line breaks counts as a single paragraph regardless of length.

Where the reading and speaking times come from

Reading time uses 200 words per minute, the commonly cited average adult silent-reading speed for general prose (technical or dense text is read slower; this is a general-purpose estimate, not a personalised one). Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, roughly the pace of a clear, unhurried spoken delivery — useful for timing a speech, a voiceover script or a video narration against a target length.

Example

A 500-word blog post reads in about 500 ÷ 200 = 2.5 minutes, and would take about 500 ÷ 130 ≈ 3 minutes 51 seconds to read aloud at a measured pace — the gap between the two is normal, since speaking is slower than silent reading for most people.

The case converters

Title Case capitalises the first letter of each word except a short list of minor words (a, an, the, and, of, in, and similar) unless that word starts the sentence — the standard convention for headlines and titles. Sentence case lowercases everything and then capitalises only the first letter of each sentence, useful for text that was typed in all caps or title case and needs to read as ordinary prose. Clicking any converter replaces the text in the box and copies the result to your clipboard in one step.

No. Every count and conversion runs in JavaScript in your own browser tab; nothing is uploaded to a server, logged, or saved when you leave the page.

Small differences usually come from how numbers, hyphenated words or standalone punctuation are counted. This tool splits on whitespace, which matches most word processors closely but not always exactly — treat the figure as accurate to within a word or two, not a certified legal count.
